The primary Uruguay airport is located in the capital city of Montevideo. A second, smaller airport operates seasonally out of Punta Del Este, Uruguay.
Carrasco International Airport
The main Uruguay airport is the Carrasco International Airport (MVD), which is privately owned and operated by Puerta del Sol. Carrasco International Airport is the largest airport in Uruguay, with three runways, and is also known as Airport Internacional de Carrasco General Cesareo L. Berisso.
Carrasco International Airport is located 11 miles (18km) east of Montevideo (Uruguay’s capital city), just north of Ciudad de la Costa in the Canelones department.
Carrasco International Airport is one of only two airports in Uruguay that provide year round international connections, and handles more than 1.5 million passengers per year. An airport improvement fee is charged to passengers departing from this Uruguay airport.
Carrasco International Airport is the primary hub for PLUNA airlines, Uruguay’s national air carrier, which offers flights to many cities across South America.
There are several car rental agencies that operate out of the Carrasco International Airport. Be aware that prices can be a bit high when renting a car at the airport as opposed to using one of the smaller rental car companies in Montevideo.
If you do not want to rent a car at the airport, you can also hire a taxi or van to take you to your destination. The bus system in Uruguay is also quite good, and buses depart from the airport regularly.
Punta Del Este, Uruguay Airport
There is a second, smaller Uruguay airport that offers mostly seasonal service during the summer months, the Punta Del Este Airport . This Uruguay airport is also known as Aeropuerto Internacional de Punta del Este.
The Punta Del Este Airport is located along Ruta Interbalnearia 93 at Kilometer 113. Most passengers flying into this Uruguay airport arrive from Buenos Aires. However, international service is also available from Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.
Most airlines only operate seasonally at this Uruguay airport.
You can also access rental car, taxi and bus services from this Uruguay airport.
