There is more than one Internet service provider you can choose from in Uruguay. These companies offer three different types of Internet access including aDSL, digital broadband (via an antenna) and wireless USB modems.
When choosing an Internet service provider and plan, there are two parts of the data transfer speed to keep in mind: the upload speed and the download speed.
- The upload speed (upstream) measures how fast you can send information (like uploading a file or sending an email).
- The download speed (downstream) measures how fast you can download information to your computer (like downloading a website, receiving an email or downloading a file).
There is a lot of confusion with the difference between the measure of file size and the measure of data transfer speed. So we wanted to provide you with a very basic explanation of Bps vs bps, KBps vs kbps, MBps vs mbps.
Data flowing back on the forth on the Internet travels (transfers) at various speeds. The information moves at what’s called either “bit” measured at bits per second (bps) or “Byte” measured at Bytes per second (Bps).
Internet Service Providers measure their data transfer speeds in (bps) in their sales contracts. You will commonly see downloaded files transferring as (Bps).
The more bits per second (bps) the faster the data will transfer.
- 1 Kilo bit per second (kbps) is 1000 bits per second
- 1 Mega bit per second (mbps) is 1000 kilo bits per second
- 1 Giga bit per second (gbps) is 1000 mega bits per second
The measure of file size and storage size is measured as Bytes and transfers at Bytes per second (Bps).
The more bytes, the larger the file.
- 1 KiloByte (KBps) is 1024 Bytes per second
- 1 MegaByte (MBps) is 1000 KiloBytes per second
- 1 GigaByte (GBps) is 1000 MegaBytes per second
- 1 Terabyte (TBps) is 1000 GigaBytes per second
So when you are downloading or uploading a file to the Internet, an easy way to figure out your KBps value is to multiply your kbps by 0.1220703125.
Downstream Examples:
256 kbps * 0.1220703125 = 31 KBps
512 kbps * 0.1220703125 = 63 KBps
640 kbps * 0.1220703125 = 78 KBps
1024 kbps * 0.1220703125 = 125 KBps
2048 kbps * 0.1220703125 = 250 KBps
3072 kbps * 0.1220703125 = 375 KBps
4096 kbps * 0.1220703125 = 500 KBps
Upstream Examples:
64 kbps * 0.1220703125 = 8 KBps
128 kbps * 0.1220703125 = 16 KBps
256 kbps * 0.1220703125 = 31 KBps
384 kbps * 0.1220703125 = 47 KBps
512 kbps * 0.1220703125 = 63 KBps
The cable Internet service we had in San Diego had a download speed of up to 10 mbps and an upload speed of up to 768 kbps. There is not an Internet service provider in Uruguay that offers cable Internet like there is in the United States, so you won’t find a service that can match those speeds.
- When written this would be (10000/768) kbps
We currently use aDSL service through Antel Communications. This type of Internet service uses the phone lines to deliver your Internet connection, so you must have a landline installed in your home (works the same way DSL does in the US).
We are currently using Antel’s “fastest” plan, which offers a 4 mbps (4096 kpbs) download speed and a 512 kbps upload speed. Of course, we’re paying more than double what we were for cable Internet in San Diego.
We use laptops, so we brought a wireless router with us that is compatible with our aDSL service (which also acts as a wireless backup hard drive). Click here to learn about the wireless router we recommend.
