Where to Find Specialty Foods Stores
in Montevideo

While you can find basic ingredients at most any grocery store or market in Montevideo, there are some that are a little harder to find. When we released The Expat Cookbook, we got several emails asking for the location of specialty foods stores in Montevideo where a few ingredients could be found.

Ask and you shall receive. Here is a list of stores where you can find some of the more “exotic” ingredients for the recipes in The Expat Cookbook.

Devoto
Coronel Mora y Agr. Francisco Ros
While Devoto isn’t a specialty foods store per se, we found that we were able to procure some ingredients there that weren’t available at the Disco, such as sesame oil and sprouts. We’ve also found packages of fresh jalapeños at Devoto.

Bambu
San Jose 1290
Bambu is an Asian food store located in the Centro area of Montevideo. You’ll find many ingredients for Asian cooking here, including sesame oil, rice vinegar, sprouts and much more.

You should be able to purchase all of the other ingredients for the recipes in The Expat Cookbook at any supermarket in Montevideo. However, if you’re interested, there are a few other specialty food stores in Montevideo you may want to check out:
